The Anti-Corporate Ideas Newsletter, Issue 4

THE A.C.I. NEWSLETTER

We are not for lies.
We are not for a continuation of blind consumption.
We are not for a continuation of the spread of corporate involvement in our government, our schools, our media, or our lives.
We are not for the billions of dollars spent here or there.
We are not for the mergers, the sell-outs. The pepsi-pushers, the McSingers, the money whores.

We are for the local businesses and atmosphere, the local coffee shop, the local general store.
We are for culture, music, writing, and ideas.
We are for individualism.
We are for a healthy planet.
We are for a healthy lives.
We are for knowing, not hoping that our grandchildren will not wish to curse us for what changes we made in our short stay on Earth.

We are not the few, we are the many. Everyone's pondered the nuclear waste, global warming, and sweatshops.
We are here to break the machine that tries to keep those concerns as passing thoughts.

We are trying to make this world a better place to live in today, tomorrow, and forever.

Misinformation
By: Halldóra Mogensen

The figures,
the facts,
our information cataract
serves naught
but to distract
the uneasy mind.
People represented
by a circumvention of truth,
on a need to know basis,
it’s shoved in our faces
all twisted and out of sync,
until we’re thinking the way
they want us to think,
until we’re sinking
in their cesspool
of misguided information,
until we’ve become the followers
of a fool’s nation,
where the rich become richer
and the poor stay poor,
and the afore mentioned facts
reveal what’s in store
when the powers that be
will push prosperity
as a free commodity
when the only ones who prosper
are the ones who foster their greed
and feed
on the seed
of ignorance planted,
then misinformation
is the only salvation
the ignorant are granted.

Lateral Thinking
By
John Henry

Corporations come in many guises. I hope as you read my ramblings each week, you will become accustomed to employing what I refer to as, Lateral Thinking. What is Lateral Thinking? I think it is best summed up as a process of moving through Life in such a fashion that events are not viewed in a forward and backward manner, but rather, around. It is the ability for one to be able to step to the side, and observe from many angles, to observe things from a lateral position. I will also challenge you to read between the lines. The obvious is not always stated.

Collateral Damage is defined as inadvertent casualties or damage inflicted on the civilian population as the result of a military action or operation. Think about how this term applies to the following story. It is a term often murmured behind closed boardroom doors. I also hope you understand it can and does happen all over America.

Last Wednesday’s final edition of The Austin America-Statesman had the headline:

Man who died in custody had multiple Taser injuries.

As I began to read the article, I realized I had been holding my breath. It has been hotter than Hades the last few days, and Stan Knee’s Valliant Defenders and Protectors had taken the life of yet another civilian.

Friendly Fire, Collateral Damage.

Since 1998, Austin has seen fourteen deaths of private individuals while, being subdued, or in the custody of, the afore mentioned civil force.

I question the validity of that demographic. I think it is a little on the lean side actually, but it is the only one available for us to use. That gives us an average of two persons per year. I don’t think that includes the members of their own rank and file who were run-over or shot by their own comrades.
I seem to remember, while I was in Government Service, I was required to requalify my skills with my weapons twice a year, is there some parallel here? Or do the officers just feel the need to break out every few months or so and bust some heads?

It gets more interesting.

Of these fourteen souls, all but one was a member of an ethnic minority. Median Age: late teens to mid thirties. Primary Ethnic Group: Black. Geographic Location: The lesser affluent part of town. They weren’t picky though. They killed women, Hispanics, mentally challenged, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, oh yeah; I almost forgot; and a Caucasian-in-a-pear-tree. You name it; they can kill it. No bias there. If you were holding the winning ticket; you joined the rest.
I want you, the reader, to understand I am absolutely not laying the groundwork for another Ethnic Cleansing, Racial Prejudice Diatribe. Not in the least. APD diligently adheres to Minority Hiring Guidelines. The Local Chapter makes sure of that.

Ah! Is that a light coming on above your head Grasshopper?

Local Chapter. Scary, Mysterious Entities, Unions. There is a time when they are, without a doubt, an absolute necessity. There is a time when they are not. Power + Corruption = Benevolent Societies. Nobody messes around with a Policemen’s Union. Would you? Heck, they can even let one of their peers get snot-slinging, knee-walking, tree-hugging, drunk, hop on his motorcycle (Wife on back), and ride off into the sunset in search of a good location to become roadkill.

Well, McDuff, at least they didn’t take anyone else out. Holidays sure are rough, aren’t they?

Not one of the participants in these incidents has been certified for prosecution by a Grand Jury. They have powerful representation from their Local. They are reassigned, put on paid administrative leave, or fly a desk for awhile, lay low, and wait until it blows over. Amazing isn’t it? Okay, I am starting to rant. I just realized the show COPS is on the telly. Thought it was supposed to be CSI. I’ve been getting Subliminals From The Darkside. Must…. Find…. Scotch. Wash…. Down…. Valium. Watch some SciFi. Find My Center.

I’m feeling better already!

Now where was I? Oh Yes! The Unions. The scary, scary, Unions.
We are blessed with a Police Oversight Committee here in our fair city. When it was established a few years back, I saw a ray of hope. It saddened me that the ray was really from a five-cell Maglight with weak batteries. It saddened me and made me shiver.
Why should we need an oversight committee? Are these guys really that bad? Why I am afraid to even suspect that? Why is the traffic ‘chopper based with them? Why does it have a larger price tag on the upgrades than the sticker price? Why are there cameras co-existing with the light posts and towers of our city like the remora and shark? These are all questions I began to ask myself.
I sincerely wish I could write my suspicions off as paranoid delusions, but the docs keep certifying me sane.

So that brings us back to the topic at hand.

Unions and Oversight Committees should be working hand in hand, and as long as the Committee does what Frontman Police Chief, Stan Knee encourages them to do, the hand in hand thing works. You see, Chief Stan has his own committee. Wonder who they are?
The Committee should be assessable to the public, but I am not sure who is on the committee or how to contact them. I would love to hear their philosophy on the subject sometime, but when and where do they meet? I don’t know. I do know that he made a public statement of censure about the chairperson of the committee in response to recommendations made over one of the incidents, and he demanded he be given voice in how the committee conducted its business. This is a man, a public servant who is commissioned to Protect and Defend the huddled masses. He is in a supervisory position, in a right-to-work-state, [For those of you not familiar with the term, it means No Unions.] Yet he has some kind of relationship with a union? Katie, bar the door!

So Reader, we now have a little groundwork, and background that will enable us to explore the events of last Monday.

In short, A crippled and on crutches, Thirty year-old Michael Clark, A black man with a three year-old son, succumbed from unknown causes while being confronted by nine officers who were attempting to bring him into custody. He was dosed with pepper spray, and eventually two of the officers introduced him to 50,000 volts of Edison Medicine. From their humane use of the Taser, Michael received two “quick” jolts from wire guided darts that can punch through two inches of clothing. Fifty- Thousand x Two. Couldn’t that possibly be a total of one-hundred thousand if administered properly? At present, there is some controversy as to the number of burns on his body resultant to the penetration of the two darts and I have some questions about the S O P as to lethal force and shoot to wound.
Michael was no angel, in fact, he was a convicted felon. None of these people were total innocents, but that doesn’t mean they deserved to die.
By the same token, I am not attacking Chief Stan, The Department, and Peace officers in general. I have known many fine men and women over the years, who have sacrificed much for their profession. They are good people. I salute them, I just have questions.
I have also heard officers whine about pay, benefits, and daily trips into Harm’s Way. To them I say,” Wake up and smell the coffee, McDuff!” It was their choice to be so employed, as it was mine at one time for far less money.
So now we will hear news of yet another misconduct investigation that the Oversight Committee will become involved in. It is a good thing that they will have the support and guidance of Chief Stan. I wonder who supports and guides him?

There is your corporation.

Letters to the Editor:

My only solution is to produce an American made movement to gain personal self-reliance. If we, as Americans, strived to produce our own food, shelter, and clothing, and stop relying on Walmart, we would all be less reliant. It requires change.

---------

To be fair, I am not entirely opposed to corporations in general. Some of them provide beneficial services to the consumers and to society as a whole (for example, certain cell phone companies provide great coverage and reliable technology, not only helping consumers, but aiding communication all across the US).

My one true concern is the profit motive, particularly when exercised by near-monopoly businesses. Some companies would rather lay off workers than allow their profit margins to fall below a certain point, even if they are still fully functional at that profit level. Yes, large corporations do have a loyalty to their stockholders, but I believe they have a much larger duty to the public and to the people that run their departments and manufacture their products. Without them, they would have nothing to build upon for the sake of profit.

A true capitalist would see to it that his workers are paid a reasonable wage (reasonable to both him and his employees), given all necessary benefits to assist them in times of need, and ensured that their jobs are just as important as the company's profits.

No one wants to have a company that bears any sort of resemblance to the scandalous behavior of Enron. Laying off workers for the sake of profit is one thing. Swindling your workers for their pensions to boost your stock is borderline diabolical.

My final thought on this matter is, if we are to have any form of stability in our economy, whether long-term or short-term, one of the first places to start is to get the workers and the business executives on the same side of pushing their company forward, not just for the good of the company or the stockholders, but for the public good as well.

Notes:

We plan on having a section focusing on the ideas of people who you wouldn't normally think of as being activists. A church sermon one editor recently heard mentioned needless consumption and that priest is sending his thoughts in for the next issue. We also hope to hear from the cogs in the machine. They're not evil, they're normal people who care about the world but have been opressed and guided into a lifestyle that many of them don't want to lead. I want to hear from the bankers, the stock brokers, the ad models... These are the people that need to hear about the message so they can find resources to escape from their lifestyles!

---------

We're planning on having a rough PDF version out for the next issue. It will have more of a newsletter look to it so you can print it out and pass it to your friends and leave it at your local coffee shops (In this case we're actually promoting a visit to Starbucks!)

THE A.C.I. NEWSLETTER

For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

- From The Dash by Linda Ellis

The following is an essay entitled The Biggest Corporation by John Henry

While staring at an image of a USA lapel pin which had Made In China on its packaging, I was starkly reminded of a prediction I had made a few years ago. I ask you, dear reader, to think about what has happened to our country as you read the following and ask yourself, Who is really at fault?

It was a fine summers day in Austin, Texas. I was looking forward to starting my new project. My plan was to build a small forge for doing some metalwork and tempering metals. One of the necessary items would be an anvil of about 35 to 50 pounds in weight. Nothing massive and unwieldly, just a small anvil. I set out on my journey to find the materials I would need. My first stop was at a local farm supply. They had anvils aplenty. Every size one could imagine, all made in China. I was taken aback. For some strange reason I had assumed they would be made in America. NOT! I had already accepted that I would probably have to use a Chimminea, (Made in Mexico), if I could not find a small pot-bellied wood stove. Then I got to thinking,

How much of the materials would I be purchasing had been made overseas? Undaunted, I decided to go American Made. I would buy American, and support Americans.

Unfortunately, it seems the Americans were out riding around in their SUVs, clogging up the roads and polluting the air.

Or something.

Eighteen months later I still had not found my American Anvil. What I had found was that very little was made in America any more. We had become reliant on the cheap labor to be found outside our borders. It was almost impossible to find anything made in this country on the shelves of Wal-Mart. The retail juggernaut had succumbed to Corporate Greed. Sam Walton is probably spinning in his grave. We had gorged ourselves on it and become addicted to it. It had ingrained itself so fully into our mainstream, that if suddenly taken away from us, we would be in a perilous state.

We cant buy American because we have become a service-oriented nation. We have become lazy, and sloven. I challenge any of you reading this to look about you. Read the labels on what you buy, then do a little research. Find out what the conditions are in the country in which the goods are made. Who owns the company that made it? What are their production standards? How are the employees treated? What is their standard of living?

Dont you dare stick your head in the sand, or rationalize this issue! China is the main recipient of our largesse, so one would think that the standard of living would be comfortable, yet it is not. Where does the windfall go? Why are human rights and basic freedoms almost non existent? Why has it become a practice to murder infant females there? I could publish demographics, stats, etc, until I go blind and my fingers grow raw and numb.

I could do this for you, but I wont.

I have done my research, now I challenge you to do yours. Countries such as China dont give a tinkers damn about the loss of income. They could close their borders tomorrow and laugh at any sanctions we propose. There is mutterings in Washington about balance of trade problems with that country, and that country could care less. Their economy wont go down the drain without the Mighty American Dollar. We will without their goods.

It is time to wake up people! We blame Corporate America for what is wrong, unjust, or just plain evil, yet it is we who are to blame for letting them lull us into the situation we are now faced with.

The industrial might of our country is what made us the greatest nation on earth. That might and the pride that goes with it was carried on the shoulders of the common man, the everyday Joe, you and me. Our Industrial Infrastructure is all but gone. How we remedy this situation will not be through the efforts of the members of the corporate boardroom. Their interests lie in how much profit they can stick in their pockets. No, the answer lies here with us.

What are WE going to do about it?

John Henry -21 September 05

On the last page of the September 19th issue of Newsweek there is an article titled Don't Mess With Mother by columnist Anna Quindlen on the consumer mentallity of our nation and how it relates to the hurricane Katrina disaster.

In it she says:
"But the failure by government, in the midst of a hurricane season forecast early on to be a monstrous one, illustrates once again the lack of a long view. The long view at the moment is not about patching levees, or building houses, or getting oil rigs back up and running, or assigning blame. It's about changing the way we all live now."

In a country that is by far leading the world community in health care advances it is sad to see the life expectancy struggle to keep at rates that had been going up for decades. Partly to blame is the lack of health care availibility to poor and lower middle class citizens. The health care plan of Wal-Mart, the largest single employer in the world, is an example of how large corporations hurt not only the pockets but also the health of the communities they live in. Wal-Mart has also come under fire as a result of its restricted employee healthcare coverage.

"Wal-Mart doesn’t pay their associates enough to handle the [health insurance] coverage that they supposedly offer us," said Belva Witt, who has worked as a cashier for the past year and a half at a Wal-Mart in Brandon, FL. "And it’s not a coverage that’s worth having anyway."

Struggle
By Zotero Amavizca

The way they raise you is aimed at enslaving you. I come with love and a vision of Humanity. I don't claim to be a deity. I'm just struggling to free you and me. So come and walk with me, Hold your head up high, lets call them out in the midst of their lies.

The contradictions become salient as I reflect on daily life experiences. I think back, finding myself with Afrikan elders in St. Loo, who would of knew, that they'd be 60 plus, working as janitors cuz the Senators sold them out for self-interests. Gutting the working class creating pockets of 3rd world labor pools. Trying to make us play the fool. We build the prisons and schools then they fill them with us too. Two systems of Oppression that are intimately tied to the Military Industrial Complex. War is the Health of the State so don't fall for their bate. The Poverty Draft is sending poor people of color to kill other poor people of color maintaining the status quo.

Now I go deeper in time, back to 1994, NAFTA passed cuz me and you have no world value. Whole villages are dispensable through the theoretical debacle that is neoliberalism. This is a prism of economic chaos that's imprisoning all oppressed classes throughout the land. Uncle Sam marching up yo street with M16 in Hand.

Repression like we've never seen before but we must resist like our Ancestors did Before. Our Predecessors have laid down the path of struggle. Resistance is vital for our Survival. We must heal the Earth, bridge the gap and live as one, in Harmony with everyone. Yes, Utopian and Idealistic, as I see my peoples with that cannibalistic look in they eye's.

So its imperative that we destroy this system of lies. Body and spirit, coupled with the strength of Heart and Mind, is where the key resides. Ghetto Youth Corporate Evil's battle field is located in that space between your ears. Polish that Gem so that it shines bright and blinds them.

Remember our Ancestors with a tear but have no fear cuz they still here.

They Walk With You

Protecting You

Never Forgetting You

Many Have Died in an Attempt to Liberate You

When we walk in their path our future is clear like water. So remember theirs no need to Conquer the World cuz its enough to Change it.

There is a great article in Rolling Stone this month on the Bush administration and pollution.

In it, columnist Tim Dickinson says:

"What can you say about the environmental record of an administration that seeks to test pesticides on poor children and pregnant women? That argues in court that a dam is part of a salmon's natural environment? That places a timber lobbyist in charge of the national forests and an oil lobbyist in charge of government reports on global warming? That cuts clean-air inspections at oil refineries in half, allows Superfund to go bankrupt and permits the mining industry to pump toxic waste directly into a wild Alaskan lake?

Only this: It's about to get even worse."

This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

The Anti-Corporate Ideas Newsletter, Issue 1

This is online edition #1.

Its rough. Its posted in a blog. It has little structure and is written by two people on too much coffee but you are looking at the beginning of something we believe might become something big. Enjoy.

(thanks to Ani for this photo)

First off, drop in and check out the
Adbusters group here on myspace as well as the website adbusters.org. Great resources and great people.

"I'm just another resource-consuming kid in an overpopulated planet, raised to an alarming extent by Hollywood and Madison Avenue, poised with my cynical and alienated peers to take over the world when you're old and weak."
-Calvin from Bill Watterson's "Calvin & Hobbes"
(you'll hear a lot from Calvin...)

Today in the world we get to see the suffering of the poor on the Gulf Cost while companies such as Stone Energy (a "small" Gulf Cost oil producer) do flyovers of their rigs to assess damage while over half of the city of New Orleans was still under water. People starve, the rich check out their money making assets (from afar, they're sitting in their plush offices several states away) with resources that could be used to deliver goods to the victims of Katrina. Good job there guys, great job. (for contact info for Stone Energy check out the bottom of the page). I can't find any reference to them donating any money but even if they had there was still a massive need for aid that could have been supplied by a redirection of their flyover and a few crates of easily affordable food. (
Check out James H. Stone's profile)

Next up we're doing a music review of The Bad Antix. We asked them their thoughts on the consumer culture and this is what we got back:
----------------------------------------
[Our] thoughts on corporate America are this, the many work hard for money just to be able to claim a suburban lifestyle and keep thier kids in schools in which they are opressed and taught skewed history on this supposed "great country". America is the land of the free, and by land of the free, they mean land of the free for those who can afford it. Halliburton either directly or indirectly kills thousands of people without a thought and write it off as "needed casualties" in thier war for oil and are rewarded for it.
In a land where Mickey Mouse is god, we have lost all sense of our goals and desires in the hope to pursue a fucked-up dream of living in white suburbia and shitting out 2.5 kids.
"you work so hard just to get out of school/ to become the perfect corporate tool/ working so hard at your 9 to 5/ thinking a night of prime-time TV is being alive" (The Bad Antix "Hell No!")

Thanks again,
tXd

If you're looking for something loud and in your face on what's going on in this world these are your guys. From Tomball Texas, The Bad Antix.

A great article in Wired Magazine. Check it out.

A piece of art by one of the guys who's up too late drinking too much coffee having too much fun: America

The magazine Scientific American has a great special issue entitled Crossroads for Planet Earth that goes over where we are and what is around the corner. On the website you can access most of the articles. Check them out.

Notes:
This post will be updated for the first couple of days it is up to take in some late submissions we've heard are going to be in. Send in your stuff quick to make this edition.
-------------------------------------------------------
We've been e-mailed about 20 websites and We're in the process of looking at them now. They will be posted up soon.
-------------------------------------------------------
Stuff we need help with:
- We're still looking for anyone to do single panel comics/art
- We need a logo. Help us out. Send us your ideas
- We need your writings. Don't worry, this isn't going to be a full time job where we call you out of bed at 3 am to write (though if you'd like that we can work something out, heh). Just write your opinions and send them in. We'll link them to you.
- Another type of story we want to cover is people sharing the point where they realized they didn't fit with the consumer lifestyle.
- Also, we don't want to come across as a cynical doomsday like paper. We want to come up with meaningful ways to change the world to be something that we can all be proud of, something we'll all love. Help us with that message.
- We need poets. We need writers. We need you!

The new home of ACI's blog

For easier editing and publishing the ACI Profile has moved its blog here.

We would like to see a weekly newsletter that covers anticorporate ideas done in PDF. Until then the newsletter will only be posted here. This newsletter will cover ideas such as what is going on in the world that should be brought to public attention but isn't, what we can do for our mental and physical environment on a day to day level, and short essays on non-corporate life experiences that our readers have had and wish to share, the little things that are now packed into a halmark or smeared across a movie screen until they mean nothing. At ACI we're also picturing each major group of people that pick up the paper to write their own local section to be included. We'd also like to get guest writers (besides our readers contributions) that are big anti-corporate writers when we get things picked up.

The myspace profile will remain as our base of operation with this as our blog.

Thanks,
Clay for the ACI Blog

(ACI's first mass release is reposted below)
